12 noon-1.00pm and 3-4pm Ashley-John Long – perhaps best known as a virtuoso bass player across the UK and well beyond, while also working in diverse range of idioms with a passionate commitment to new music. For this Brecon Jazz event however, Ashley swaps the double bass for the jazz vibraphone. Expect to be surprised and delighted. Ashley, who is based in Cardiff, graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with Honours and the Simon Clarkson Memorial award for best Musician. He has won awards for his compositional and collaborative work.
2.00-3.00pm FILM: John Coltrane: ‘Live Performances’: Join us for a special festival private viewing, and see some rare footage with complete live 1960’s European performances of John Coltrane (Tenor/ Soprano) Wynton Kelly (Piano), with members of the Miles Davis rhythm section – Paul Chambers (Bass) Jimmy Cobb (Drums). Also Coltrane’s group with Eric Dolphy on alto & flute performing heartfelt versions of ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Ev’rytime We Say Goodbye’ & ‘Impressions’. The lunch menu is especially selected from lovely local, ethical caterers + suppliers to provide high quality and timely repast for busy festival-goers! Our lunch consists of a main item plus breads and salads. Options subject to availability. You can request ‘local lamb’ for £2 supplement payable on the day:
– Broccoli & Per Las cheese Quiche (veggie)
– Fresh Tomato & Basil Quiche (veggie)
– British Fava Bean Falafels (vegan + gluten free)
– Pulled local pork slow cooked in a smoky roquito pepper marinade, slightly hot.
– Pulled local lamb seasoned and slow cooked with North African flavours – pleae advise and add £2 extra which can be paid on the day
Your booked main dish will be served with your choice of –
– Khobz bread (Middle Eastern flatbread using organic white flour) or
– Jan’s homemade wholemeal bread.
There will be a choice of 3 salads (all suitable for vegans)
– Fresh tomato salad
– British quinoa salad
– New herbed potato salad.
The pork used is very local – from an award-winning free range farmer who regularly sells at Brecon Farmers Market. The lamb is from Paddy Sweeney, the butcher in the local market arcade. He gets his lamb from local farmers – he’s always happy to talk to customers.
Minimal oil is used in preparations, no mayonnaise, and only free range eggs.
Reasonably-priced bar drinks (wine, cider, local beers), as well as teas, coffees, juices + home made cakes can be purchased alongside your big Sunday plate!
